Have you ever wondered how to make a simple mosaic tile or coaster? Here, artist Caroline Coates shows you the step-by-step process. You could do it in your own time, or support your learners to complete their own in the classroom. Let us know how you get on!

What you'll need

  • Mosaic tiles or broken ceramics
  • PVA glue & spreader
  • Wooden base
  • Pre-mixed grout and scrap plastic to spread it with
  • Plastic gloves
  • A cloth
  • Small pieces of felt

Instructions

  1. Spread PVA glue generously onto the backing board, working area by area.
  2. Stick mosaic pieces on so they are close but not touching.
  3. Once the board is covered, leave it it dry for an hour.
  4. Using a scrap of firm plastic, push the grout generously into the gaps while scraping it across the surface. Make sure every crack is filled in, and add grout along the sides of the tile too.
  5. Remove excess grout, scraping in both directions.
  6. Leave for half an hour, and before grout is fully set, using a slightly damp cloth, wipe excess grout from each mosaic tile.
  7. After 24h, give the tile a scrub to get the last of the grout off.
  8. Add small pieces of felt to the back with glue to protect surfaces and create a coaster.
