Maker's Marks

Looking at the backs of tiles and bases of pots can provide useful information about their history, such as who designed, made or decorated the piece, and often, quite accurately, when this was.
Since 1893, when Pilkington began making tiles, the firm used a number of standard factory marks. Initially they used simply a letter ‘P’. But in 1903 the well known designer, Lewis F. Day created a new stamp, combining the ‘P’ with two bees, to represent the managers, William and Joseph Burton.
